Commentary

This week's chart sees a switch at the top - with last weeks number 1 I Got U falling to the number 4 position, and instead being swapped for the beautiful Magic by Coldplay, the first single to be taken from latest studio album Ghost Stories. The track recently re-entered the top 20 officially following the split of frontman Chris Martin with wife Gwyneth Paltrow.

SEVEN new entries this week, the highest being the #2 debut of Faul & Wad Ad vs. Pnau with Changes. The track recently debuted at  #3 officially in the uK, but going all the way to #1 in Germany. The track samples Baby by Pnau and is utterly sublime - the soaring saxophone and beat intertwine so well together, with the sample slotting in perfectly. So haunting yet so summery, this'll sound even better in the sun.

The next new entry came courtesy of HAIM with If I Could Change Your Mind at #14. This is the latest single to be taken off #1 album Days Are Gone and sees the girls pull off a full-on dance routine in the video. A fantastic slice of pop from them, upbeat and instantly memorable for me.

Next up at #16 is Pumpin Blood by NONONO. This actually came out last year, but I FINALLY discovered it thanks to YouTube. I recognised it on an advert and finally managed to find the whole thing! Anyway, it's very quirky but in a brilliant way, I love how the whistling element is incorporated.

YES, your eyes are not deceiving you, as #20 is a brand new entry from 5 Seconds Of Summer with She Looks So Perfect. I have indeed been slating it this week for it's cringe lyrics, but THOSE aside, it's too infectious and catchy for me to escape, I actually really love the guitars in it as well as the boys' vocals. This recently went to #1 in the UK, being the latest Australian act to do so since Gotye ft. Kimbra with Somebody That I Used to Know in 2012.

The next new entry at #26 is The Pierces with Believe in Me. This track sports an uber-cool video, and the video is how the song itself came to my attention, after flicking music channels. I was vaguely aware of The Pierces before but this has really made me take notice of them, hopefully the track can translate into mainstream success for them.

Penultimate new entry Arabella debuts at #30 for the Arctic Monkeys. I'm absolutely loving the singles from AM so far, with Do I Wanna Know? being one of my favourites of all of last year. Arabella is another great one for them - replicating the moody sound once again for a fantastic new single.

Last but not least comes Hey Now from London Grammar. They initially came to my attention from loving their song Strong last year (their second UK Top 40 Chart entry after Wasting My Young Years) and they are back as haunting as ever with Hey Now.

(Most of) My CD collection

Hello all,

Today I decided that for today's spontaneous blog post, I would showcase my CD collection. I've been collecting CDs since I was around 7 or 8 years old - a couple of my earliest being Avril Lavigne - Let Go & NOW 60 compilation album. Since then I still buy them to this day - whether it's cheap finds on eBay/charity shops/carboot sales or just in my local HMV. Beware - most of these CDs are from my childhood (Same Difference and HUGE Spice Girls, High School Music & Hannah Montana phases say hello) so it's nowhere near as 'respectable' as my iTunes library, as that mostly consists of downloads. Still, I shifted through a lot of nostalgia as well as more recent CDs to bring you my single and album collection! Quite a few surprises such as I didn't realise quite how many Geri Halliwell singles I had(!!) Oh a quick note, quite a few are either missing or in my parent's cars, so there are a lot of omissions here such as albums from The Killers & Disclosure, as well as quite a few NOW albums. Still, this is most of it. My room was turned upside down and a lot of googling was done to double check what years some of this came out, so enjoy!

Without further ado...

5 Seconds of Summer - She Looks So Perfect

She Looks So Perfect looks set to top the U.K. Singles Chart this week - with 70,000+ copies already being sold at the mid-week point. The band met when they were sixteen and rose to fame after they supported One Direction on the Australian leg of their tour.

I was apprehensive before listening, as the title sounded like an uber-cringefest, but I was somehow willing to be convinced otherwise. As the track begins, the first thing I notice is that the vocals are actually pretty good and I was enjoying the first verse, so I was wondering whether I actually would be convinced. Unfortunately, the chorus came around and my initial thoughts came back, as the lyrics are rather cringe indeed. It also made me feel like a very uncool sixteen year old as I failed to recognise what "I'm so down" meant. Still, I think it could end up being a guilty-pleasure grower due to the catchiness. Not something I'd go back to in a hurry, but I can definitely see why this would appeal to the intended target audience.

2/5

Faul and Wad Ad vs. Pnau - Changes

Changes is a track by electronic duo Faul and Wad Ad from Paris who specialise in deep house. The track samples Baby by Pnau and recently went to #1 in Germany.

Changes is completely sublime. The saxophone riff is outstanding throughout and the beat compliments it so well. Such a brilliant choice of sample too - the lyrics and vocals completely gave me chills. Another thought I had was that it wasn't dissimilar to last years summer smash Sonnentanz (Sun Don't Shine) by Klangkarussell ft. Will Heard.

4.5/5

Martin Garrix & Jay Hardway - Wizard

Fresh off the back of #1 smash Animals, recently-turned-18 year old Martin Garrix is back with follow-up Wizard, this time teaming up with Jay Hardway.

For me, this is a HUGE step up from Animals. Although taking certain elements from  Animals such as the hand-clapping build-up, I find this track far more interesting (even though being completely instrumental) with fantastic production and intense drops - especially the second one. The opening synths draw you in straight away - and the track goes by so quickly that I end up with it on repeat.

4/5

Tujamo ft. Plastik Funk & Sneakbo - Dr. Who!

Chart newcomers Tujamo and Plastik Funk team-up with Sneakbo - who scored a top 40 hit with Ring-A-Ling in the summer - for latest track Dr. Who!

The title of the song to me was really quite different, it drew me in alone as I wanted to know how exactly Dr. Who! would be incorporated into it. Unfortunately this completely didn't live up to my expectations, as it's a bit too repetitive and even quite generic. Pretty uninteresting really.

1/5

Dansson and Marlon Hoffstadt - Shake That

Dansson and Marlon Hoffstadt are 18 year old producers from Berlin. Shake That proved to be very popular in Ibiza over the summer.

This style of music has been making quite the impact recently, not sounding too dissimilar to house smash Storm Queen's Look Right Through. While I don't think this is quite as good as Look Right Through, the Nate Dogg sampling Shake That sounds like a grower and is certainly catchy.

Britney Spears - Britney Jean (Album Review)

Britney Spears - Britney Jean (Album Review)

I know this album isn't exactly brand new - with a December 2013 release, but I recently won it in a competition (courtesy of www.poplovedance.blogspot.com) so as my newest album, I thought why not.

Britney Jean is Britney's 8th studio album following a phenomenal career since her breakthrough ...Baby One More Time in 1999, amassing over 100 million record sales worldwide since.

Britney noted in interviews prior to release that eponymous Britney Jean would be her most personal album ever, and this already seems evident from the surprisingly stripped down photoshoot on the cover as well as the title being her first name and middle name (No, not a Michael Jackson homage). With lead single Work B**ch! though, it didn't exactly seem like the most personal kick off to the campaign, so I was curious as to how the rest of the album would turn out.

Even if taste is subjective, for me Britney Jean is much more than it's #34 UK peak suggests. Britney may not be at the top of the game right now in terms of chart success, but the overall quality of the album is exactly what I was hoping for from the pop princess.

Alien was a spot on choice for an album opener, as it slowly draws you into it. A fantastic mid-tempo start to the album, Britney's vocals are sounding brilliant. Not only the vocals, but also this album boasts some of the best choruses on album tracks in her career - such as Passenger, 'Til it's Gone and Body Ache. The personal theme begins to become more evident throughout away from the dance production, such as on second single Perfume - a track packed with emotion as Britney tells of the heartache of a cheating boyfriend.

The album is by no mean's perfect - for me the duds come in the form of It Should Be Easy with far too much auto tune and a bit of a non-event of a chorus, duet with sister Jamie Lynn Chillin' With You which is a bit vapid and sounds out of place with it's country vibes with the rest of the album and as sublime as the production for Work B**ch! is, the accent remains endearing but odd which is a bit off-putting, although the accent also featured on hit Scream & Shout with will.i.am which went to number one last year and Work B**ch! gave her the latest solo top 10 hit in the UK since Hold It Against Me, so a lot of the public must think otherwise.

An album featuring a lot of creative control from Britney, for me this is something to be proud of with some excellent pop moments in a lot of the soaring choruses, and the deluxe version is worth getting, the three bonus tracks are up there with some of the main tracks. A few duds but on the whole a very pleasant pop album from her that I very much enjoyed.

Commentary

This week's chart sees the number 1 spot being filled by the summery I Got U by Duke Dumont ft. Jax Jones, making it the second longest run for a #1 in my chart in 2014 so far (With 5 weeks for Ready For Your Love by Gorgon City ft. MNEK). The runner-up is a climber from Coldplay with Magic, the first single released from their newest album Ghost Stories.

The highest new entry comes courtesy of Tove Lo ft. Hippie Sabotage with the brilliant Stay High (Habits Remix) at #10. The song is a remixed version of Tove Lo's Habits, and for me this version just edges it. This came to my attention after it gave Tove Lo her very first official UK Top 75 entry - charting at #59 this week.

Next in at #12 was The Pretty Reckless with Heaven Knows. The band is fronted by Taylor Momsen and originally came to my attention in 2010 with their chart debut Make Me Wanna Die - giving them a top 20 hit at #16. They soon followed this with Miss Nothing later on in the year at #39. Like Stay High, Heaven Knows also came to my attention this week by checking out new entries within the top 100 over the past couple of weeks, as it is currently a climber up to #61 this week. This is a true return to form for the band, with an instantly memorable chorus, much like Make Me Wanna Die.

The next new entry at #14 comes courtesy of Lady Gaga with G.U.Y. It is the third single to be taken off her latest studio album ARTPOP, and has made such a high debut thanks to the premiere of the music video (which I recently reviewed here: http://jadewilliamsmusic.blogspot.co.uk/2014/03/lady-gaga-guy-music-video-review.html). Originally not one of my favourites on ARTPOP (The songs so far to chart in my personal chart belong to Applause, Do What U Want, Venus, MANiCURE, Swine, Mary Jane Holland & Aura), this finally hit me with a few watches of the video. The production is pretty fantastic considering I wasn't a fan of some of the production on ARTPOP (Swine, I'm looking at the breakdown of you) and the chorus is infectious.

At #16, the next new entry comes from Karmin with Drifter, an album track taken from upcoming album Pulses. This track came to my attention after Karmin recently had a live stream to debut tracks from their upcoming album, and being a huge fan already of their material and covers, I had to check it out. Out of everything, Drifter stood out the most to me, with a killer catchy chorus much like Acapella, they fuse pop and rap perfectly every time. Karmin rose to fame after posting covers and originals on their YouTube channel - soon making their chart debut in 2012 with Brokenhearted at #6.

New at #18 sees the Glee Cast with Toxic. This cover was recently featured in their special 100th episode, with songs predominately ones that they had covered before to celebrate the landmark. The New Directions had previously covered it in Season 2 Spears tribute episode Britney/Brittany, but this Season 5 version features the vocal talents of characters Quinn Fabray (Dianna Agron), Santana Lopez (Naya Rivera) and Brittany Pierce (Heather Morris). This was the first appearance of Agron and Morris this season, with the latter returning after giving birth last year. The song itself is a huge step up for me from their Season 2 version as I much prefer the sultry arrangement, and their harmonies work SO well together for me.

The final new entry comes courtesy of Iggy Azalea ft. Charli XCX with Fancy. Azalea is rather hit-and-miss with me, but Fancy is definitely a high for me. Initially, I didn't quite know what to think of it, but it has very much grown on me now. The production first of all is fantastic and carries the song along so well. Iggy Azalea recently scored her first top 10 hit officially with Change Your Life ft. T.I. debuting at #10, with Charli XCX also making her chart debut last summer as a featured artist on Icona Pop's #1 hit I Love It. Hopefully this'll be a smash for both of them.
